Fuels Burned Primarily coal; also light fuel oil

Generating Capacity 171 MW

Location Point Aconi, Cape Breton Island

Details

Point Aconi was commissioned in 1994. It is Nova Scotia Power’s newest and most environmentally progressive coal-fired generating station.
The plant uses a special technology called a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) in its boiler which helps to significantly reduce emissions. Fuel and limestone are fed independently to the boiler, and mixed with the ash already present to form the “bed”. Air is also fed to the boiler in various locations to ensure complete combustion, resulting in lower NOx emissions than typical coal-fired boilers. Point Aconi also has a 90 per cent reduction of SO2 emissions because of the CFB boiler technology.
The boiler exhaust flue gas at Point Aconi enters a baghouse which acts as a large filter for the plant’s particulate emissions. It allows the plant to have greater fuel flexibility.
