A newer neighbourhood developed on abandoned industrial land MIT had bought in the 1970s. MIT leased the land to Forest City Enterprises for development in 1983. The development was fraught with protests against what many nearby Cambridge residents feared would result in gentrification. Building started in 1985 and coincided with city improvements to nearby Central Square. Today, University Park includes 10 bioscience research buildings, 674 apartments, a hotel, restaurants, a health club, a childcare centre, and parking for 2700 cars.
