One of the jewels of Boston's "Emerald Necklace", the Esplanade is a riverfront park consisting of grassy lawns, gardens, paved jogging trails, ornamental trees, a shallow Lagoon with fountains and several architectural features, such as the Hatch Shell and Charles River Community Boating. The Esplanade forms the southeast edge of the Charles River and is popular with locals for jogging, roller-blading, biking, sunbathing, and picnicking. A private operator runs traditional Venitian gondola boat tours on the Esplanade Lagoon. Each Independence Day, the Esplanade is "ground zero" for Boston's fireworks display, set to the music of the Boston Pops orchestra and attended by tens of thousands of locals and tourists.
