The ruined medieval castle was built in the 13th century atop an Iron Age hill fort. It served as a fortified and administrative center of the Lords of Islay or of the Isles, from the clan MacDonald. The castle consisted of stone buildings surrounded by a wooden palisade and encompassing some cultivated ground; the complex occupied most of the island and was connected to the mainland via a stone causeway. The castle was demolished in the 16th century.
