crematorium

France / Alsace / Natzwiller / D130

To Natzweiler, the mortality rate was 40 %. The transported convicts having tried an escape or being simply suspected of escape attempt incurred the death penalty: the hanging or the firing squad. The Gestapo of Strasbourg also used the camp as the place of execution. So, in 1943, thirteen young people native of Ballersdorf in the Haut-Rhin were shot in the quarry to have refused their incorporation in the Wehrmacht and tried to leave the annexed zone. In September, 1944, shortly before the evacuation of the camp, members of the network Alliance and resistance fighters of Vosges were brought to the camp to be executed there. All finish in the crematorium.
