The property has served as the site of the Avila Schoolhouse since 1903. At that time, a one room schoolhouse served the Avila Beach community at this location. With the entry of Union Oil to the Avila Beach area, a larger school was needed to serve the growing community. In 1913, the existing two-room Avila School was constructed on this same lot. Two years later, the smaller one room structure was moved near the corner of San Luis Street and First Street. In 1950, the Avila School District Board of Trustees purchased an adjacent parcel of land in order to expand the school property to the south and provide for the construction of a paved playground, retaining walls and a chain link fence along the perimeter of the site.

The two-room schoolhouse was closed in 1966 and students were then bussed to the Bellevue Santa Fe School on San Luis Drive. The Avila School was then leased by the Functional Living Program between 1967 and 1980 for workshops for the handicapped, mentally disabled and adult education. Later uses included a museum and a little theatre. As recently as 2003, the schoolhouse building housed the Avila Beach Christian Fellowship. The building has been vacant since August, 2003.

The property is being redeveloped and the schoolhouse will be renovated.
