In 1953, there was not a single building where Homestead is today, and much of the land was still a marsh. This rapidly changed as Homestead was developed from west to east. By 1960, practically all of Homestead had been constructed, along with a new school named after Highland's founders. Today, the neighbourhood has come to be seen by some as relatively undesirable due to its proximity to the more crime-laden northern suburbs.

Homestead is officially known as Homestead Gardens and consists of the Homestead Gardens 1st and 2nd Additions and the Homestead Gardens Master Addition Blocks 1-26.
