Tobi Ishi Hana has been translated as "Leaping Stone Point."
On Feburary 22, 1945 (D-day plus three) a patrol from E Co. 2/28th Marine Regiment, moving down the east beach at the base of Suribachi reached Tobi-ishi Point at 4:30 p. m., encountering minimal resistance. They found that the shear cliffs of the volcano had been so blasted by naval shelling that no way of climbing up the south, east, or west sides could be found. A cold, driving rain blowing in from the southeast prevented further advances up the slippery muck of Suribachi and they pulled back to Regimental CP at Beach Green. Taking a flag to the top of the mountain would have to wait another day.
