It was built in 1778. The Abbey of Kells (Mainistir Cheanannais in Irish) is a former monastery located in Kells, County Meath, Ireland, 40 miles north of Dublin.
The Abbey of Kells, with its round tower, is associated with St Columba (also called St Colmcille) and with the Book of Kells, now kept at Trinity College Dublin. In the 12th century the Augustinians established a priory here. The round tower and five large Celtic crosses can still be seen today, the area around the tower has been developed as a community park.
