Here on Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, sitting in the first row of seats in the "colored" section of the bus, was ordered by the bus driver to stand and move to the rear so that a white passenger, waiting to board and without any seats left in the "white" section, could have the seat. The other three blacks in the row with Mrs. Parks complied, but she refused. The driver then left the bus and called police, who shortly arrived and also ordered Mrs. Parks to move from her seat. She refused and was then arrested.
