The Anrakuji used to be a rather big Zen temple and the center of learning in the 1200s (the Kamakura period). With the support of the Hojo clan (until the clan was overthrown in 1333) the temple educated many learned priests and collected many Buddhist statues and scriptures.
This is the oldest Zen temple in Shinshu, and it stores a number of national treasures and important cultural objects from the Kamakura period.
