Mount Gower is the highest point on Lord Howe Island at 875m. By 1980, the Lord Howe Rail (also known as Woodhen) were reduced to about 20 individuals, almost all of which live on Mt Gower. Since that time a successful captive breeding program has greastly increased their numbers. There is cloud forest on the mountain top which is the remnant of an ancient volcano.
