Canadian Forces Base North Bay is the most important military base in Canada with respect to the continental air defense of North America and Canada's air sovereignty. Home of 22 Wing and its subordinate commands, CFB North Bay is the center for the air defense of the entire country, and works in concert with NORAD for the air defense of Canada-U.S. portion of the North American continent.

Following the end of the Cold War and subsequent drawdown in military forces, CFB North Bay became the only Canadian Air Force Base that does not have either flying units or an airfield on its grounds, as its last assigned squadron departed in 1992 and its airfield was shut down and sold to the provincial government in 1993 and now operates as the civilian Jack Garland Airport.
