This is the historic summer cottage of George Van Dusen, a magnate and pioneer of Minneapolis' grain-storage industry. Van Dusen's 118-year-old main house in Minneapolis is on the National Register of Historic Places as the "George W. and Nancy B. Van Dusen House":

Built in 1910, this particular cottage is over 110-years-old and the home used to serve as Van Dusen's lakeside retreat during summer weekends. The previous owner, Jean A. Hedlund, bought it in 1978 for $135,000. On May 19, 2010 she put it up for sale for $2.1 million, however it was heavily damaged in a June 2010 fire. The job proved challenging because of the home's location along Smithtown Bay at the bottom of a narrow, winding road inside a gated community where no fire hydrants were available. As a result of the fire damage, the home was reduced in priced and sold as-is, eventually selling for on November 07, 2011 for $1,250,000 to Berg Drywall; company head Randall Schneewind, whose company has done many restoration projects, plans to meet with architects and restore the structure.
