This island belonged in the early 19th century to Egerton Ryerson, the founder of public education in Ontario. He says in his diary that one Sunday he sailed across from Port Ryerse on the mainland and spent the night on his island. Anybody who has ever gone ashore from Pottahawk Point and experienced the bugs will be impressed. He must have been one tough guy.
