Mayo (Irish: Maigh Eó, meaning "plain of the yew trees"), or Mayo Abbey (Irish: Mainistir Mhaigh Eo), also known as Mayo of the Saxons, is a village in southeastern County Mayo. It lies 4 km west of the N60 road between Claremorris and Balla, about midway between them. It was a notable Christian centre for over a thousand years. A monastery was founded here in 668 AD by St. Colman, bishop of Lindisfarne.
