Shokaku is the sister ship of the Zuikaku. They were two of the six Japanese aircraft carriers that participated in the raid on Pearl Harbor. They were also two of the three aircraft carriers to take part in the Battle of the Coral Sea, the first naval engagement in which it was entirely fought using planes instead of big guns. These two ships missed out on the second carrier vs. carrier engagement at Midway, but were present during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Battle of Santa Cruz, and the last great carrier vs. carrier engagement, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, also known as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot." Shokaku was sunk by the submarine USS Cavalla during this engagement, while the Zuikaku was sunk by carrier air strikes during the Battle off Cape Engano, part of the largest naval engagement in history, the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
