The largest building in Plimouth Colony was the fort/meetinghouse.

The downstairs level served as the meetinghouse, while the upper story held the colony's heavy artillery.

The two biggest human threats to the early colony were the Native Americans and the Spanish.
The steep hill would have given the Pilgrims good early warning of any approaching Spanish ships and the heavy guns here could have kept a modest landing force at bay.

The artillery would have been little use against a Native American attack, and given the all-wooden nature of the colony, a concerted native assault would probably have resulted in the total annihilation of the little English outpost.
