Saint George's Parish was established at the turn of the 20th century, with this church being completed in 1923. Though the church, its hall and a former nun's residence are all located on the Dartmouth side of Highland Avenue (which ends just in front of the church), the rectory is in Westport, meaning the parish is considered to be in Westport as well. The parish formerly operated a school along American Legion Hwy (Rte. 177); however, the Sisters of Saint Joseph now own the school and operate it as the Montessori School of the Angels, and its only use by the parish is for catechism classes.

The brick church, with a small white cupola and Spanish tiled roof, is currently being renovated, with stained glass windows being installed along the lower aisles (the upper nave windows have always been stained glass).
