By 2000, Alfred Harrison was the "star money manager" at Alliance Capital Management and at one time presided over about $80 billion of investments, sitting as vice chairman, and oversaw the Alliance Premier Growth fund. He was at the center of negative attention when his funds were burned by Enron stock, leading to lawsuits over his actions (he was found to have done nothing wrong when the fund lost more than $281-million for the Florida state pension fund by buying Enron stock as the energy giant imploded). Interestingly, he remained Vice Chairman at Alliance Capital because he did not want to leave Minneapolis for New York.

He has served as Minneapolis Institute of the Arts (MIA) Board Chairman.

The Harrisons established the Martin Lenz Harrison Land-Grant Chair in Pediatrics‚ an endowed chair in memory of their son Martin, at the University of Minnesota.
