White Hill reaches an elevation of 1430 feet and is located in the White Hill Open Space Preserve. For a moderate hike it offers the reward of generous views and a bit of mystery. On May 16, 1946 a B-17 Flying Fortress crashed into the side of the hill. The plane was preparing to make a stop at nearby Hamilton Field on a long distance flight between Clovis, NM and the Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific. Seven of the nine crew members survived. On the cusp of the cold war, the plane was linked to top secret weapons testing on Bikini Atoll. An information black-out was immediately imposed on the whole incident. The link below offers some insight into the affair. A movie, 'The Mystery on White's Hill,' was also produced.
