Partially burned down in fire in 2004. Historical building with many famous antiques. Great food too.
CLOSED!!!
The gracious three-story building was built in the 1800’s and has quite a history to tell. The loggers who were working these San Bernardino Mountains in those years used to frequent this establishment by visiting the bar downstairs first, followed by dinner in the parlor and capped with a social visit at the upstairs boudoir.
Post Office Boxes from Sutter Creek
Throughout the house, antiques from the 1800’s are displayed for your enjoyment. These have been collected mostly from the west. Greeting you at the entrance are three porcelain lion heads weighing 450 pounds each, which once adorned the old Pacific Trailways Building in downtown Los Angeles. The stained glass windows and entry doors came from the State Capitol building in Carson City, Nevada, which was built in the 1800’s as well. The bar in the lounge was originally the 80-foot-long bar at Ormsby House Hotel, which prides itself on being the first gambling establishment in Carson City. The large wagon wheel chandelier in the lounge once carried a Confederate Civil War artillery piece. By the way, remnants of the original Post Office from the goldsmith camp at Sutter Creek, California, cover several walls.
In 1992 chef Walter Rippe opened the Chive’s Inn & Tavern, beginning a relationship with locals and tourists, unsurpassed by any other mountain restaurant. Great food, excellent service at very competitive prices was the basis of Chef Walter’s success. In 1994 Randall Hollowman joined the team, managing the front of the house, and in June of 2000 became Chef Walter’s partner. Now after Chef Walter’s retirement, Randall and his wife Lisa own and operate The Chef’s Inn, carrying on Chef Walters' high standards of dinning excellence .
