GRI - Queen Elizabeth Building (Glasgow)

Built between 1974 and 1981, this was the first (and largest) phase of the New Building of Glasgow Royal Infirmary, it was Sir Basil Spence's last contribution to the Glasgow skyline. Only from above you can appreciate the building's "modular" design, which consists of a flat podium onto which blocks can be added in stages. The University Block and the Ward 60-67 Block were part of the original complex, whilst the Maternity Block at the top RH corner was added in 2001. Two vacant spaces remain on the podium for future expansion.

This is the epitome of 1970s hospital design - in other words it does everything to cause angst to patients, and utter confusion to visitors - the place is a unfathomable rabbit warren of dimly lit (and identical looking) corridors that go on for miles, three sets of lifts whereby it is a total lottery whether or not you find the ones which take you down to the exit. They did at least refurbish the rather grim reception concourse in 2003!
