Scotland's largest teaching hospital - and one of the largest NHS hospitals in Scotland overall, Ninewells was built in 1971-75 to a design by Sir Robert Matthew - replacing Dundee Royal Infirmary, and several other smaller hospitals. The massive complex is the main hospital for all of Tayside, northern Fife and the south eastern Highlands. It is also Dundee's biggest single employer.

Like so many 1970s hospitals it is a rabbit warren of illogically laid out and endless corridors, made worse by the fact that its hillside setting means you actually enter the building on an upper level, so the seventh floor is actually also the ground floor, and most of the levels are in fact below grade. Other notable features are the strange car park design, which is a bit like a giant staircase.
