Roboski (Kurdish: Robozkê) is a Kurdish village in the Uludere district of the Şırnak province in southeastern Turkey. The village had a total of 954 inhabitants in 2010. The original name was Robozik, and the villagers' sources of income are smuggling and the village protection system.
Roboski gained national fame on December 28, 2011 through a tragic event in which 34 villagers between the ages of 13 and 38 years were killed by shelling Turkish fighter jets. The villagers were on a smuggling tour with mules when the Turkish army attacked them. The army said the group was mistaken for a PKK unit. However, there are numerous indications against this claim, including the fact that a Turkish drone had been watching the group for four hours from the start in Roboski village before the attack. A local army commander later stated that before the bombing, he would have confirmed to those responsible that the people were harmless had he been asked. A member of the ruling AKP party, on the other hand, said it could only be a misfortune "because the Turkish state would not deliberately kill its own citizens". A final report is still pending, leading to disagreements and accusations between the government and the opposition.
