ASKOLD STRAIT lays between the continental shore and the southwestern shore of Putyatin Island on one side and Askold Island on the other. Unkovskiy Rocks are located in the middle part of the Strait. A surface current flowing westward can be observed in the Strait. At Askold Island its maximum velocity approaches 1 knot. At the continental shore and at the southwestern shore of Putyatin Island the current is barely noticeable.
