church, place with historical importance
This former church building located at 49 Division Street was constructed by the African American community of Newport in 1871 replacing the original building called the “Old Salt Box.” The congregation dates back to 1780 from the original prayer services of the Free African Benevolent Society. Today the building and original congregation that used it represent the first free black church in America.
