Tehsil Almora, District Almora, Uttarakhand, Bharat
Almora, अल्मोडा (hindi), અલ્મોડા (gujarati) is a cantonment town in Almora district in the state of Uttarakhand, India, founded in 1568.
Almora is located at an altitude of 1638 meters (5,500 feet), on a ridge at the southern edge of the Kumaon Hills of the Himalaya range. In the shape of a horse saddle shaped hillock it is surrounded by thick forests of pine and fur trees, flowing alongside the city are rivers of Koshi(Kaushiki) and Suyal(salmale) and to top it all are the snow capped Himalayas in the background.
It is a town bustling with activity, and has a rich cultural heritage and history. It is considered the cultural heart of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand (Wikipedia)
Almora is also the birth place of a 1902 Nobel prize winner, Ronald Ross (1857-1932) who has studied the Malaria disease. His father Army General CCG Ross was working here at the time. Interestingly, Ronald Ross did his Nobel Prize winning work in India near Hyderabad Begumpet Airport, as a Medical Officer of Indian Army of British India. Now the place named as Ronald Ross Institute is under Osmania University, Hyderabad.

  • An important place in the history of Kumaon. The city is a bridge between the past and the present. It has so much to offer if one desires to look into the past. Almora is situated on the cliff and offers entirely different sights from different parts of the city. The views are simply mind blowing. The congestion is disturbing but the Pataal Bazar takes one back to his memory lanes if he had spent a part of childhood in this place. The old temples Specially that of Nanda Devi ,Jakhan Devi, are mesmerizing. With a high migration rate I find people spread all over the country and US emotinally remembering Almora. ay the blessings of Nanda Devi shower on all those associated with this place in anyway.
