Alden Biesen Commandry (the Old Rushes) used to be the headquarters of one of the 12 or so administrative regions of the Order of Teutonic Knights, a group whose origins go back to the mediaeval crusades.

The Knights founded the commandry in the 11th century, though the present buildings date mostly from the 16th century or later. The castle is used today as a cultural and conference centre. Plays, operas, flower shows, drama and musical training are held on the premises.
