Anti Motor Torpedo Boat Battery 21, Rockaway Point (New York City, New York)

USA / New York / New York City, New York
Second World War 1939-1945, artillery battery, United States Army, historic ruins

Four guns were originally located here: two 90mm guns mounted on concrete gun mounts (Guns 1 & 3; the guns were removed after the war, but the mounts remain) and two mobile 90mm guns (Guns 2 & 4) on platforms. According to battery plans, Guns 2 and 4 had ramps leading up to their timber firing platforms. Aerial imagery shows that Gun #2's firing platform was still in place into the 1980s and remains of it may still exist under the vegetation.

AMTB batteries defended against enemy aircraft and fast motor torpedo boats. AMTB Battery 21 was constructed in 1943 and deactivated in 1946.
