This entrenchment was one of the 32 fortifications belonging to the 95 Km. long outer defending girdle around Antwerp.
Entrenchment Smoutakker was build in 1906 between fortress Stabroek and Ertbrand.
It was armed with a 75mm cannon, but was short-lived. Due to an unexpected violent explosion in 1914 it was totally destroyed.
After more than 85 years of neglect, it was purchased by “Natuurpunt” in 1999. Ever since it is nature reserve.
