Avantipura has ruins of ancient Hindu temples built by King Awanti Varman in 855-883 AD. Avantishwar temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located at Jawbari on the bank of River Jhelum. Less than a kilometer away is Avantiswamin temple, devoted to Lord Vishnu. Architectural pattern of both the temple are quite similar. The walls of the entrance are embellished with sculptured reliefs. Now these ruins are protected and maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. Set amidst beautiful natural landscape of Awantipora, this ancient grandeur never failed to attract tourists from all corners of the world.
