It is said that while in hiding after Guy De Falks's failed plot, Sir Digby had this tunnel under the road made so as to extend his exercise walk and remain unobserved. How much truth there is in this I'm not sure, but the tunnel remains and many years ago when I last visited this tunnel, there was indeed a footpath off from each end. The Tunnel is of uncertain age, but the facades are mid nineteenth century, postdating the gunpowder plot by two and a half centuries. Digging tunnels isn't the best way of keeping a low profile. So this may not be an actual Guy Falks relic, but Digby did hide in Gayhurst untill his arrest.
