hospital, psychiatric hospital / clinic
The hospital first opened in 1861. It is the third oldest extant public building in Texas. The name was changed from State Lunatic Asylum to the more politically correct Austin State Hospital in 1925.
The design of the building called for 4-foot thick stone walls to hush the noises of "disturbed individuals".
