Stately home and gardens with follies. Open to the public.

Wentworth Castle is a Grade I listed country house, the former seat of the Earls of Strafford, at Stainborough, near Barnsley in South Yorkshire, UK. It is now home to the Northern College for Residential and Community Education. The former manor house is now home to administration offices, main teaching rooms as well as bar & dining room.

There was tremendous rivalry between Thomas Wentworth (3rd Earl of Strafford) of Wentworth Castle and Thomas Watson (later Thomas Watson-Wentworth) of Wentworth Woodhouse. The bone of contention was the inheritance (on the death of William Wentworth, 2nd Earl of Strafford) of the latter estate, which lays to the South East of Stainborough. A manifestation of this feud is still visible in the architectural follies that were built by the rivals, each on his own patch.
