'A' Royal Marines Reserve is a commando trained General Reserve to 3 Commando Brigade. All volunteers within the RMR have passed through the same rigorous Commando Course as their regular Royal Marines counterparts. Volunteers may be civilians with no previous military experience, or have transferred from the TA or were former Royal Marines.

The RMR consists of approximately 600 trained ranks, who are distributed between the five RMR Centres within the UK. Approximately 10% of the RMR are working with the Regular Corps on long term attachments in all of the Royal Marines regular units. As well as outstanding infantry skills, RMR Scotland provides specialists in Assault Engineering and Civil Military Co-operation.

RMR Scotland is sub-divided into seven detachments to enable Reservists to be drawn from the main areas of population within Scotland and Northern Ireland. The main detachment is Glasgow which is located alongside the HQ in Govan. The six remaining detachments are based in Greenock, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and Belfast. While maintaining all the infantry and amphibious skills of the Royal Marines, RMR Scotland also specialises in Assault Engineering and Civil Military Cooperation.
