Alert Bay proudly boasts the world's tallest totem pole, at 173 feet (52.7 metres), carved by six Kwakwaka'wakw artists.
Victoria, B.C. had a record breaker carved in 1994 from one cedar log for the Commonwealth Games. Originally 180 ft 3 inches/55 m tall (some websites say 185 feet), the Spirit of Lekwammen pole was later reduced in height for safety reasons to its current 40 feet/12m. The remaining 140 feet is now stored at the Songhees Indian Reserve. Victoria's Beacon Hill Park also has a "world's tallest totem pole" (which it was when it was raised in 1956), but it is only 127'7" (39 m) tall.
