Ruin of 12th Century monastery in the care of English Heritage. Open to the public.
Monk Bretton was a Cluniac establishment, founded from Pontefract.
Dissolved in 1538, Monk Bretton Priory was a relatively small foundation of about a dozen monks.
Unlike many monastic ruins -- such as Mount Grace Priory, Reivaulx Abbey and Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire, and Roche Abbey near Maltby -- Monk Bretton has lost its isolated location and has been closely surrounded by urban development (as has Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds).
