  • Named in honor of local resident Arthur Lee-Knot, part-time gardener at Monckton Pallet Yard and amateur Glam Rocker Gary Glitter impressionist. He had a huge following doing all the local clubs (Klondyke, North Gawber WMC, Silkstone Britsh Legion amongst others) and became a local legend. Barnsley MDC decided to name the village after him in recognition of his work for the community. He peaked and hit the big-time with a cameo role in the film KES filmed nearby. He played the turn on at the club where Jud tried to chat up her from Coronation Street. However it all went horribly wrong when Gary Glitter turned out to be a perv and the estate rebelled at the prospect of living with the shame of being named after a failed perv and so Barnsley Met had to rename the estate. The Arthur Lee-Knot name became corrupted and has ever since been known as Athersley North. Arthur himself, although perfectly respectable, never recovered from the stigma and turned back to gardening. Today he can sometimes be seen strutting his stuff in Ryhill allotment shed, reliving old glories.
