With funding provided by Bond Measure DD, passed in 2002, the waterfront at the West end of Lake Merrit is being dramatically reworked to create a waterfront park along the lake shore and estuary by re-aligning 12th street, including the august 2011 demolition of the Frickstad Viaduct which formerly abutted the lake. 6 lanes of traffic will be consolidated on a single roadway, Lakeshore Avenue will be closed to through-traffic and used instead for lakeside parking. The traffic will be diverted onto a new bridge connecting to East 12th Street, International Boulevard and 1st Street, effectively removing the tangle of freeway-like roadways which have blighted Lake Merrit for generations and returning it to the purposes of public recreation long ago envisioned as one of the many purposes of the lake.
