A well-preserved stone age temple erected about 3500BC, predating Egypt's first pyramids by about 800 years and Stonehenge by about 1200 years. According to legend, stone for its construction was brought to the site by a giantess, Sunsuna, which might be the origin of the temple's name (I have seen Ġgantija translated as 'Giant's tower', 'The Giant's Feet' or simply 'Gigantic').

The site's purpose appears to be the worship of a fertility godess.
