cemetery, churchyard, Grade II Listed (UK)
St Joseph's Churchyard is also a historic cemetery in Birmingham. The Burial Ground at St. Peter's Chapel on Broad Street (in Birmingham City Centre) had been the sole place of interment for Catholics since 1826, but had become so over used that it became necessary to create a new cemetery elsewhere in the city. Accordingly, a large piece of land, consisting of about 4 acres, was bought for £1,000, in the parish of Aston, and dedicated for that purpose.
On Sept. 18th, 1850, the new Cemetery of St. Joseph, Nechells Green, was consecrated by Bishop Ullathorne, attended by twenty priests and the choir from St. Chad's, in surplices. It became the first Catholic cemetery in Birmingham.
