RAXAPANA JUMMAH MASJID

Sri Lanka / Colombo / Seethawakapura /

Raxapana Jumma mosque is the first mosque in Malwana and is one of the oldest mosques in the island established in 1792 by the Muslim traders who traveled through and settled on the banks of the Kalani River. Since then the mosque has been contributing a lot in the evolution of the Muslim population in the region and today more than 20000 Muslims inhabit Malwana.
The mosque is over a couple of centuries old and has undergone small expansions in 1892, 1922 and the last, half a century ago in 1961. The fact that the mosque’s building structure is decades old and that the muslim population in Malwana is rapidly increasing has necessitated a new mosque with major expansion.
It is proposed a new mosque which will cover an area of 20000 sq ft , at an estimated cost of US$ 761000.
