Augustinian monastery, established early 12th Century. Founded by Walter L'Espec, Lord of Helmsley, who also supported the foundation of the Cistercian establishment at Rievaulx.

Interesting gatehouse facade, attractive location.

Open to the public. In the care of English Heritage.
