Selected in 1998 for a large scale expansion from its existing airfreight sorting and processing facility, FedEx Express invested several million dollars into the expansion and construction of a fully modernized hub and apron facility at Piedmont, with the express aim of making the airport the hub of FedEx Express' Mid-Atlantic services.

Opened on June 2nd, 2009, the hub's intended role and workforce had been severely curtailed from its projected 1500 workers to just 160, or the same amount as the 1998 facility. Faulting the economic downturn of 2007-2010, FedEx Express has given no time line as to when the hub will be operating at its expected levels, though the top-of-the-line facility and additional third runway constructed to handle the increase in flights will likely see both the volume of cargo and workforce to handle it increase in the future.
