One of the most scientifically productive medium-sized telescopes on the planet. The telescope is part of the Fred L. Whipple Observatory (FLWO) run by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO). It is used entirely for spectroscopy of celestial objects (breaking up the light into its constituent colors, studying chemical signatures, and measuring the doppler shift of the object -- i.e. its velocity towards or away from Earth).
