Cashelmara is Gaelic for "Stone House." The red brick building in the center of the complex was once the summer estate of industrialist Washington Lawrence, the president of the National Carbon Company, the forerunner of Union Carbide, until his death in 1900. When the last of his daughters died in 1948 the property became the Bay View Osteopathic General Hospital. The hospital closed in the late 70s and now serves as the main building at Cashelmara.
