Yaquitepec

USA / California / Julian /
interesting place, abandoned settlement, historic ruins

These are the ruins of Yaquitepec, which means "House of the Sun" in Yaqui, the house built by writer Marshal South in the 1930. He would painstakingly pack in all of the building materials necessary for creating his own isolated oasis of life. He and his family -- wife Tanya and their three children -- would reside in the house that he built until 1946, when an acrimonious divorce ended the "experiment in primitive living." His back to nature approach to life would be chronicled in a series of articles that he wrote for Desert Magazine during those years. Their story is chronicled in the recent book "Marshal South and the Ghost Mountain Chronicles."

John McDonald released a documentary called "The Ghost Mountain Experiment" in 2007. The story is also the focus of the last episode Huell Howser was putting together before his untimely death in 2013.
