The Chennai river basin consists of a group of small rivers such as the Araniyar, Kusathalayar, Cooum, and Adyar Rivers. The four rivers once supplied fresh water to the city . Currently however, Chennai City does not have access to a perennial river and has to depend primarily on three major former irrigation tanks (reservoirs) and one small reservoir across a river that floods only for a few days during the monsoon
