Tangail was a sub-divn established in 1870. On 01 Dec 1969 it was established as new District by the Govt. A Master plan for Tangail Dist HQ was prepared in 1966-57 on 356 acres of acquired land on the northern fringe of old Tangail town. The area was divided into 4 zones, namely Adm zone, Res zone, Police line and Jail. The area being low, 12'-15' deep from adjacent Tangail-Mymensing highway, for its development a large lake was excavated on the east and south. PWD Tangail Div executed the work to complete most works by 1970.
